Recovery 20th Anniversary
The year 1996 is remembered in Australian folklore for several reasons; it was the year Australia celebrated 40 years of Television, Michael Jackson married Debbie Rowe at Sydney’s Sheraton Hotel on the Park, and the North Melbourne Kangaroos downed the Sydney Swans in the AFL Grand Final (sorry Swans fans, sensitive time).
And most importantly of all, it was the year we started adjusting our body clocks (not iPhone alarms) to be up at 9am every Saturday morning for Recovery.
20 years on; Daniel Johns is no longer a teenager with luscious locks, Jebediah have well and truly left home, and we look back fondly on the time when we could see our favourite artists LIVE (even if we were underage) without needing our parents to escort us.
Recovery was our gateway into the world of our favourite artists from around the country and across the globe, with Dylan Lewis and Jane Gazzo as our fearless leaders, each and every Saturday morning!
It was short and sweet, only a few memorable years of performances, sketches, interviews and music videos on a show we dearly miss.
Unscripted, unforgettable, unreal! – KRAM, Spiderbait
Holy Shit. Recovery…What a trip. – Phil Jamieson, Grinspoon
Fantastic, Shambolic, Incendiary. Bring back Recovery!!! – Ian Haug, Powderfinger
2016 marks 20 years since iconic ABC TV show Recovery was first broadcast on our screens. Are you feeling a little nostalgic now? Are you thinking “Yeah, I loved that moment on Recovery when…?” Are you missing the unpredictable chaos that was Recovery?
To celebrate the 20th anniversary, ABC Music has assembled this very special collection. Featuring over 100 of Recovery’s most memorable performances, courtesy of the finest local and international artists of the era; Powderfinger, Grinspoon, Silverchair, Nick Cave, Paul Kelly, Something For Kate, Midnight Oil, Frenzal Rhomb, Custard, Natalie Imbruglia, The Living End, You Am I, Sonic Youth, The Dandy Warhols, Bad Religion, Spiderbait and many more.
I hope you enjoy this recording a lot. It was created by good people. Perhaps you’ll feel nostalgic when you listen to it? Or get goosebumps (I do!)? Or use it as a teaching aid for your kids? – Dylan Lewis (minus the eyebrow ring)
It was definitely a significant and healthy time for music in this country (…) There’s still an excitement about these live performances that was there when they were first broadcast. – Jane Gazzo (minus the hair clips)
How lucky we were to have been there, to have been invited in and asked to help carve out a special little piece of Australian music and television history! What bloody marvellous times they were! – Kevin Mitchell, Jebediah
The Recovery 20th Anniversary CD/DVD box set is out now.
