1000 Years of Classical Music is a major new project from the ABC, celebrating and exploring classical music and its rich history through radio broadcasts, album releases and digital content. The project will showcase music within its cultural context, providing an accessible entry-point for new listeners and enriched experiences for existing music-lovers.
The project began over the Easter long weekend (25–28 March 2016), with an ABC Classic FM broadcast surveying the full 1000-year history of classical music over four days. Meanwhile, ABC Classics will release 100 albums over the coming 18 months charting that history – a flagship range that will be rolled out across the Australian and international market. It will also launch the project with an 8-CD collection on 11 March. Ongoing radio programming, as well as future audio-visual content, will ensure that the project continues to bring classical music to a broad audience into the future.
More information can be found at the project’s website 1000yearsofclassicalmusic.com, which includes a blog, engaging facts and music playlists.

BAROQUE & BEFORE (c.1000 to c.1750) – The age of the church and the court – with music from ancient chant to the treasures of the baroque, including Hildegard, Tallis, Monteverdi, Vivaldi, JS Bach and Handel.
THE CLASSICAL ERA (c.1750 to c.1820) – The era of innovation – the birth of the symphony, the arrival of the piano, the first concerts, and the towering geniuses of Ludwig van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
THE ROMANTIC ERA (c.1820 to c.1900) – Revolution, heroism and ambition – told in music through the virtuosic concertos of Chopin, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, and the operas of Puccini, Verdi and Wagner.
THE MODERN ERA (c.1900 to the present day) – A world of fragmentation and a flourishing of diversity – from music born out of World War I to 21st-century Australia, via French Impressionism, Eastern European minimalism and American classics.
