Frankie's Beans Cafe

Frankie’s Beans Cafe

While the Sydney lockout laws have stifled the nightclub industry around Kings Cross, the daytime economy appears to be thriving.

We recently went for a daytime walk around the once red-light capital of Australia to discover that it’s still a hive of activity surrounded by some great new stores, restaurants and cafes.

One such example is Frankie’s Beans – a specialty coffee roaster and cafe located below the famous ‘The Elan’ building and just a stone’s throw away from the famous Coke sign. This is a cafe where it’s not unusual to hear customers welcomed by name and asking for an ‘Ethiopian FAB with 11.4 grams of coffee’. Frankie’s are so committed to creating a unique coffee experience, that its customers become coffee connoisseurs and discover their own preferred perfect cup of coffee.

We’d heard about its famous ‘3 Colombians Blend’ and couldn’t resist giving it a try. They take the one Colombian bean and roast it three different ways to give three different flavour profiles, and then blend all three together to give multiple notes. For the record, it’s amazing and we’re not surprised why it’s an award-winning blend.

An incredible level of detailed care is put into creating beautiful coffees. The grams of coffee grains in every single coffee are weighed to exact measurements for accuracy and consistency of flavour. There is a real science applied, from how the machines are calibrated each day based on the amount of CO2 in the coffee, to the three stages of pressure used to extract the oils from the coffee.

While the coffee is top-notch, the food is just as superb with a range of breakfast options, jaffles, sandwiches, and salads. On our visit, we sampled the Smashed Avo (sourdough, rocket, tomato, feta, balsamic glaze, oregano) and the Brekky Bowl (quinoa, spinach, mushroom, roast tomato, avocado, poached egg, miso dressing). The food was faultless – beautifully presented and full of flavour.

Frankie’s Beans is a cosy cafe with a village atmosphere with locals, business people, families and fans who travel for a drop or a bite. The staff really get to know their customers. While we were there, it felt like we were in the owner’s living room with most punters being greeted by first name. If you want a seriously good award-winning coffee, or want a friendly cafe to enjoy a tasty breakfast, snack or lunch, add Frankie’s Beans to the top of your list.
