The D’s Bar & Dining is an awesome new restaurant that has just opened its doors in Marrickville.
After almost 20 years honing his culinary skills in Sydney’s most exclusive dining establishments, Chef Lucas Doan has brought to life his childhood dream to open his first restaurant in an area where he and his family first migrated to in Australia.
Most recently head chef at upmarket Luna Lu, on Sydney Harbour, and before that at Merivale’s iconic Mr Wong, Doan’s inspiration for The D’s Bar & Dining stems from his family’s long history in hospitality in their native Saigon, where they had a strong presence in restaurants, bars and cafes.
Having worked in various kitchens across Asia, as well as his more recent stints at some of Sydney’s high-end restaurants, Doan draws on his varied experience in creating The D’s Bar & Dining menu. He counts international heavyweights Wolfgang Puck, David Chang, Martin Yan as well as local chefs Dan Hong, Takahiro Teramoto and Clare Smyth, as his culinary inspirations.
At The D’s Bar & Dining, Doan has created a contemporary Asian menu reflecting his dual Vietnamese/Chinese heritage, and catering to an eclectic demographic of cultures for which Marrickville and the Inner West is known. Guests are encouraged to embrace the customary approach of sharing dishes. Doan uses only the highest quality ingredients for every dish on the menu, for example Appellation oysters, Glacier 51 Toothfish and Phoenix Wagyu with a minimum marbling score of 8.
To start, there are some outstanding options including the Hokkaido Scallop, Hiramasa Kingfish, Prawn Toast and Beef Pho Tartar made of Phoenix M8 Wagyu, broth jelly, basil, eschalot and sesame rice cracker. If you’re hard-pressed to choose, we highly recommend the Sashimi Platter with its delectable selection including scallops, kingfish, salmon, tuna and oysters. You cannot go wrong with this one!
As an in-betweener, you absolutely have to try the Glacier 51 Toothfish – one of the tastiest dishes we’ve sampled in recent memory with its super delicious white miso caramel, seaweed and chive. Simply outstanding! For something more substantial, the Crab Fried Rice is a standout featuring Alaskan king crab, corn, egg and supreme sauce making for an addictive dish that will both please your palate and fill your belly.
Mains highlights include the Crispy Eggplant Tempura with sweet and sour sauce, coriander and chilli; Beef Suon, ranger valley black angus, in a special reduction sauce with eschalot, coriander and chilli; and The D’s Duck which is brined for a minimum of 24 hours and then roasted in house. It is served two ways – Peking style with baos instead of the traditional pancake, as well as duck salad.
To wash it all down, you have an impressive cocktail selection to choose from including signatures Coco Phe Martini and Déjà Vu, plus a comprehensive wine and spirits list to complement the exotic menu. There’s even coffees, teas and juices if you want to keep it alcohol-free.
The D’s Bar & Dining brings multicultural dining to the suburbs ensuring you don’t have to travel into the bustling CBD for such an experience. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it’s a great new addition to Marrickville’s exciting dining scene.
