Alpha Restaurant, Sydney
The Hellenic Club has long been recognised for being the centre of Greek culture in Sydney. Housed in the same historic Victorian building is Alpha Restaurant. While the Hellenic Club has been a meeting place for Greek migrants, shopkeepers and businesses for several decades, the traditional and contemporary Greek cooking at Alpha will no doubt continue to attract this community (along with those looking for an authentic Greek dining experience) for some time to come.
Designed by DS17’s Paul Papadopoulos, Alpha’s dining room takes its inspiration from the Greek islands with whitewashed walls, earthy tones, feature lamps resembling fishing nets and a sandstone wall engraved with letters of the Greek alphabet. Greek cooking has always been synonymous with generosity, hospitality and shared feasts, which is what Alpha Restaurant is all about.
Overseeing the menu is head chef James Roberts (Est, Omega, China Doll, Civic Dining, Pitt St Diner, Salt Meats Cheese) and executive chef Peter Conistis who is renowned for mixing modern techniques and the best local ingredients with the essence of traditional Greek cooking. Awarded several chef’s hats in the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide, his dishes are testament both to his innovation and his respect for his Greek heritage. His signature dish, scallop moussaka, has appeared on the menus of all his restaurants, including Alpha today. And we can confirm, it’s absolutely delicious.
At Alpha, you’ll find touches of the culinary creativity for which he is renowned together with a host of rustic, seasonal dishes, many of which are cooked in Alpha’s wood-fired oven. Highlights on the menu include:
